Thomas Merton
Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 11:15AM Tomorrow is the feast day of Thomas Merton, so I brought his little book The Wisdom of the Desert with me on this windy and cold trip to Chicago. Merton originally translated these sayings of the Desert Fathers and had a hand-made limited edition printed by his friend, Victor Hammer, in Kentucky. Thinking about that intimate production makes these sayings still more personal for me.
In his introduction, Merton challenges the reader not to think only about what a saying means, but to wonder about how a saying might have been lived. All of these sayings, he reminds us, emerged out a very particular dilemma in the life of a particular monk. The very first saying in the book seems enough to ponder for the rest of the week:
Abbot Pambo questioned Abbot Anthony saying: What ought I to do? And the elder replied: Have no confidence in your own virtuousness. Do not worry about a thing once it has been done. Control your tongue and your belly.
So tonight, in honor of Merton, I am going to go to Grace Episcopal at Printers' Row for silence and then to Amarit for Tom Yum soup and shrimp dumplings.

What are the top three to five words or phrases you would use if you were use to search for the product or topic you are selling?
